Cafe Moro

The coffee at Cafe Moro is really delicious. I have really only had mochas and lattes, but they are really good. People who are more adventurous than me also say that the "Fly Boys" are good, which is tea with a shot of espresso I think. They also serve beer and wine. As far as food goes, all I know is that they have really good pita and humus. They also have pastries and things of that nature. The service is either really good, or not that great depending on who is working. It's a good place to go to study. One thing that is kind of weird about it, is that there is a "sliding closing time", which basically means that they close at different times depending on how many people are there. They usually close near there posted closing time, but I have been there when I got kicked out at like 9pm because I was the only person there. There is a little side room for big groups or people that want to talk, but beware that sometimes it gets reserved for groups. Sometimes bands play on Friday or Saturday, but this seems to be sporadic.

Okay yes, Cafe Delirium is actually in Gresham. But when you live as far east as we do, downtown Gresham is a lot closer than even inner south east Portland. I love Cafe Delirium, because I always see a familiar face. If it's not a customer I recognize then it's one of the three baristas I have known for years who work there. I don't drink coffee, but I have heard that it's good and I can vouch for their tea selection. My usual is Tropical Green Tea with a pump of raspberry. The atmosphere is fantastic. Every piece of furniture and lamp is unique and comfortable. They have free internet, a selection of used books and board games. It is also in the heart of downtown Gresham with windows facing Boccellis and Sunny Hans (I have met Sunny Han and he is a super cool guy) - two of my favorite Gresham restaurants. In the summer they have wine tastings and on Music Mondays you can sit outside and watch local musicians play on the sidewalk across the street.
BUNK Sandwiches
Location: SE or Downtown Portland, OR

I had a great treat from my managers at the Portland Timbers the other day - lunch from BUNK sandwiches. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich which came in a poppy seed bun with red onions, avocado and thick slices of bacon served with kettle chips, pickle slices and chocolate chip cookies. This is the only thing I've had from there, and I've never actually been to the brick and mortar so I can't vouch for the atmosphere or service, but oh my god was this delicious! Apparently there is one in Southeast in addition to the one downtown. If you want to experience a serious foodgasm, I highly recommend this place.

This is also in Gresham, but it is one of my all time favorite places to eat when I feel like something hearty. The Trufflehunter makes its own bread (which they also sell separately in loaves), and it is freakishly giant. Unless you plan on taking half a sandwich home with you, I always recommend getting a half sandwich because it is actually larger than most people's standard whole sandwich. And if you get a half, you can combo that with some beer battered fries or a side salad. The restaurant is inside an old house right on Powell that has been there since Main Street was a dirt road. The front entrance is surrounded by photographs of old downtown
Gresham and the girls high school basketball team from 1911. I gave the atmosphere 3 1/2 stars though because it is a bit cramped (my rating says 3 because I couldn't figure out how to do half a star). My favorite is the classic BLT, but I tried something different this last time and got the Grilled Turkey Club with melted swiss, chipotle mayonnaise and avacado and a side of beer battered fries (top). Charlie went with the Monte Cristo - a breakfast style sandwich with egg, ham and melted cheese sandwiched between two pieces of powdered suger-dusted french toast (bottom). He also upgraded to the new parmasan garlic beer battered fries which were delicious. The food here is fabulous and it is pretty affordable too at about $7 to $11 per person. I first went to Maialina for Valentine's Day 2013. Besides that first visit, I have never had to wait for a table. I think they have amazing pizza! The crust and bread is really good - so tasty, just like Italy (I've been to Italy and I think the pizza is similar). The first time I was there we got the classic - margherita and the dolce verde. The dolce verde pizza is now my favorite pizza of all time. I didn't even know what white pizzas were (me - "bianco? why is the pizza white? what does that mean?"). The dolce verde has cream, garlic, house ricotta, roasted grapes, melted leeks, fresh arugula, mascarpone, lemon, maldon sea salt, and evoo. The roasted grapes are the best part! I have also had the meatballs al forno appetizer which was good as well. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The downsides are - the atmosphere is good...it would be great except the dining area is a huge open room so it gets really loud in there and sometimes it's hard to talk. A lot of the words on the menu are things I don't know how to pronounce correctly, but the servers don't make you feel too bad about it so that is a plus. The price is affordable too, $12-$15 for a pizza, but things could add up if you get appetizers and drinks as well.
